The battery-shaped warning light means the charging system is not working correctly.
Your car is running on battery power and may stop when it runs out.
Common causes
- ▸Failed alternator
- ▸Broken or slipping auxiliary belt
- ▸Loose or corroded battery connections
- ▸Faulty battery
What to do
Turn off non-essential electrics like heated seats and the radio. Drive to a safe place or garage without stopping the engine if possible, as it may not restart.
Diagnosis
A mechanic can test the alternator output and battery. See our battery life guide.
Hybrid and EV cars
Warning lights differ. Check your manual.
Can you keep driving?
Most cars can run for a short time on battery power alone, but how long depends on the battery’s charge and which electrical systems are in use. Headlights, wipers, and heater fans drain it quickly, so driving at night or in rain shortens the time available. If the light comes on along with a temperature warning or steering becomes heavy, the auxiliary belt may have broken — stop as soon as it is safe, as the engine may overheat.
CAUTION: This is general automotive information, not professional mechanical advice. Always follow your vehicle manufacturer’s specifications and service schedule, and have brakes, steering, tyres, and other safety-critical systems inspected by a qualified mechanic.
