Living near the sea is great — but salt-laden air settles on cars and accelerates corrosion, especially on the underbody and in seams.

Prevention is cheaper than rust repair.

01

Wash regularly

Wash the car at least every couple of weeks, including the wheel arches and underbody. A hose or pressure washer with an underbody attachment helps reach hidden areas where salt collects.

02

Protect the paint

Wax or sealant creates a barrier against salt and UV. Reapply every few months. Fix stone chips promptly with touch-up paint so rust cannot start.

03

Watch the hidden areas

  • ▸Door bottoms and drain holes
  • ▸Sills and wheel arches
  • ▸Brake lines and fuel lines
  • ▸Exhaust and suspension fixings
04

Interior and electrics

Sand and humidity can affect interiors and electrical connections. Vacuum sand regularly and use a moisture absorber if windows mist up. See our guide to salt air vs road salt.
