Finding a puddle under your car is worrying. Sometimes it is just water from the air conditioning.
Put a piece of white card under the car overnight to see the colour clearly.
Colours and causes
- ▸Clear, odourless — water condensation from air conditioning (normal)
- ▸Brown or black, oily — engine oil
- ▸Green, pink, orange, or blue, sweet-smelling — coolant
- ▸Red or pink, oily — transmission or power steering fluid
- ▸Clear to yellowish, slippery — brake fluid
- ▸Blue — screenwash
Most urgent
Brake fluid leaks are a safety risk — do not drive. Coolant leaks can lead to overheating. Fuel smells should be investigated immediately.
Location clues
Front centre is often the engine or radiator. Near wheels may be brake fluid. Middle of the car can be the transmission.
Pets and children
Coolant is toxic but tastes sweet. Clean up spills promptly.
