Fog can reduce visibility suddenly, making it hard to judge speed and distance.

The key is to drive at a speed that lets you stop within the distance you can see.

01

Use the right lights

Use dipped headlights. High beams reflect off fog and reduce visibility. Use fog lights only when visibility is seriously reduced, and switch them off when it improves, as they dazzle other drivers.

02

Slow down and leave space

Increase your following distance and avoid following the lights of the car ahead too closely, which gives a false sense of security.

03

Practical tips

  • ▸Use wipers and demisters to keep glass clear
  • ▸Open the window slightly at junctions to listen for traffic
  • ▸Avoid overtaking
  • ▸Check mirrors before slowing down
04

If you need to stop

Pull off the road completely if you can. If you break down, put on hazard lights and move to a safe place away from traffic.
