Dirt, bird droppings, tree sap, and road salt damage paint over time.
Every two weeks is a good general guide, more often in winter or near the coast.
Wash sooner if
- ▸Bird droppings or tree sap land on paint
- ▸Roads have been salted
- ▸You have driven on muddy or dusty roads
- ▸You live near the sea
Washing technique
Use the two-bucket method, a car shampoo, and a soft mitt. Wash top to bottom. Avoid washing up liquid, which strips wax.
Automatic washes
Brush washes can cause fine scratches; touchless washes are gentler but less thorough.
Protect after washing
Dry with a microfibre towel and apply wax or sealant every few months.
Do not forget the inside
Cleaning the interior every few weeks keeps the car pleasant and protects resale value. Vacuum carpets and seats, wipe dashboards with a damp microfibre cloth, and clean the inside of the windscreen to reduce glare at night. Shake out floor mats and dry them fully in winter to stop damp building up and misting the windows. Avoid strong solvent cleaners on dashboards and screens.
