Hailstorms can strike with little warning. Large hailstones dent roofs, bonnets, and boot lids and can crack windscreens.

Repairs are often expensive, so prevention pays.

01

Watch the forecast

Use weather alerts in hail-prone areas, especially in spring and summer storm seasons. If hail is forecast, move the car under cover before the storm arrives.

02

Cover options

  • ▸Garage or covered car park — the best protection
  • ▸Padded hail covers designed to absorb impacts
  • ▸Thick blankets or duvets in an emergency, secured against wind
03

If you are driving

Pull over somewhere safe, ideally under a bridge or petrol station canopy, without blocking traffic. Stay inside the car and keep away from windows.

04

After the storm

Photograph damage and contact your insurer. Paintless dent repair can often fix small dents without repainting if the paint is not cracked. Have any glass chips assessed quickly before they spread.
