Motorways are statistically among the safest roads, but speeds are high, so mistakes can be serious.

Good habits keep traffic flowing.

01

Joining

Use the slip road to match the speed of traffic and merge smoothly into gaps.

02

Lane discipline

  • ▸Keep to the inside lane unless overtaking
  • ▸Return to the inside lane after overtaking
  • ▸Do not undertake where it is not allowed
  • ▸Signal early
03

Breaks

Take a break at least every two hours.

04

Breakdowns

Exit if you can. Otherwise stop on the hard shoulder or emergency area, get out on the side away from traffic, and stand behind a barrier.

05

Smart motorways and variable limits

Some motorways use variable speed limits and open the hard shoulder as a running lane at busy times. Follow overhead signs, and never drive in a lane marked with a red X — it is closed, often because of a breakdown or workers ahead. On roads without a hard shoulder, aim for emergency refuge areas if you have problems, and know how to call for help.
